Satellites, drones and autonomous boats: the tech used to combat illegal fishing

Not far from the coast, where fishing communities make a hard living, criminals are hard at work too, plundering and wrecking one of Britain’s greatest natural resources.

“You’ve got a lot of Spanish deep-sea bottom trawlers fishing off the coast of Scotland. I don’t have a clue what they’re pulling out the water and discarding,” says Will McCallum, head of Greenpeace UK’s Oceans campaign.

“We saw a few months ago, a load of sharks without their fins on washed up on an Irish beach. Shark finning is completely illegal by any [European Union] vessel anywhere in the world.”

As the UK prepares to leave the EU’s fishing regime, illegal trawling in British territorial waters is expected to increase….
