A 23-year-old man was shot Wednesday night in the Oyster Point section of Newport News, according to Newport News police. Officers arrested a suspect following a several-hour stand-off at a contracting business later in the morning.
Spokesman Brandon Maynard said in a news release dispatchers got a call about the shooting at 11:27 p.m. in the 800 block of Old Oyster Point Road, near the intersection with J. Clyde Morris Boulevard. and Harpersville Road.
There, officers found the man suffering from an gunshot wound Maynard described as life-threatening. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Police chief Steve Drew told reporters after a suspect had been taken into custody that the man had serious injuries but seemed to be improving.
