A 23-year-old man was shot Wednesday night in the Oyster Point section of Newport News, according to Newport News police. Officers arrested a suspect following a several-hour stand-off at a contracting business later the next morning.
Spokesman Brandon Maynard said in a news release dispatchers got a call about the shooting at 11:27 p.m. in the 800 block of Old Oyster Point Road, near the intersection with J. Clyde Morris Boulevard and Harpersville Road.
There, officers found the man with a gunshot wound Maynard described as life-threatening. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew said Thursday that his condition seemed to be improving.
The shooting happened across the street from Hoss’s Deli, according to Maynard, in Olde Oyster Point Shoppes. A tweet from Newport News police showed crime scene tape set up in a parking lot behind one of the buildings in the shopping center.
