Annual drone race to benefit STEM mentoring nonprofit

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) — A race for drones this upcoming weekend will benefit a local nonprofit that helps youth from low-income households learn skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The third annual Castle Hill Drone Race, which will take place Sunday at Castle Hill Cider, will benefit Computers4Kids.

The event is organized by Cville FPV and will take place between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Drone racers from across Virginia will participate by piloting radio-controlled multi-rotor quadcopter dones through a series of obstacles, flags and gates.

They will use video goggles to see via a camera mounted on their drone, which allows them to navigate.

The racers are also invited to donate drone-building parts to C4K, which will be used by youth members will use to build drones with their mentors.
