Fire at Notre Dame Cathedral: What we know


A fire erupted at the famed Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France.

Updated at 8:46 p.m. ET: French billionaire pledges to help rebuild cathedral.

Within hours of flames bursting through the roof of Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral Monday, spokesman Andre Finot said “nothing will remain from the frame.”

The cathedral’s spire, which was a familiar part of the Paris skyline, was completely engulfed by flame when it fell into the building.

Here is what we know:

Cathedral won’t be a complete loss

French police confirmed just after 10:30 p.m. (French time) that the main building of Notre Dame Cathedral has been saved.

They also said that valuable icons in the cathedral’s vault have also been saved.
