Drone leads police to £200k cannabis farm in Spinney Hills

Cannabis worth up to £200,000 was discovered in a police raid in the city – thanks to the help of a drone.

Leicestershire Police seized 160 mature cannabis plants, worth an estimated £150-£200k at a property in Rolleston Street, Spinney Hills, on Thursday.

Police acted following complaints from local residents and businesses about a strong smell of cannabis.

The force used a drone to pinpoint the heat source from the lamps used to grow the drugs. The drone’s infra-red thermal imaging technology was needed in the densely built up area as it was hard to discover exactly where the smell was coming from.

Police say heat from the lamps used to grow the cannabis was considered a serious fire risk, which would have spread to other properties.

Enquiries are currently ongoing to trace those who are responsible
