Spy chief praises ‘illegal’ US drone strikes – ‘They have greatly benefited Britain’

America, under President Obama, allowed extremists to be targeted overseas.

Sir David has defended the use of drones in a new book, Principled Spying. He insisted that RAF drone pilots were not detached killers playing a remote “video game war” but rather emotionally involved individuals bound by a strong discipline and a “culture of restraint”.

Britain deploys Reaper drones armed with Hellfire missiles or 500lb bombs from RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire and from Creech US Air Force base in Nevada.

Despite nearly 6,000 missions in the four-year war against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, with 3,762 weapons fired, there has been just one error: The killing of a dozen Syrian soldiers in Deir al-Zor, Syria.
