Orland Park a rare police agency using drones as state considers allowing the devices for surveillance

Orland Park stands out as one of the few communities where police are using advanced drone technology to help apprehend criminal suspects and search for missing people.

Police from other jurisdictions have enlisted Orland Park’s drone assistance on at least five recent occasions, Police Chief Tim McCarthy told me.

“In most cases, it’s a missing or lost person,” McCarthy said. “If we’re available we’re going to assist.”

Orland Park recently dispatched an officer and drone to help search for a missing person in a wooded area of Richton Park, McCarthy said. The department also helped Romeoville police search near a McCook quarry for a suspect in a murder investigation, he said.
