Skydio, started by a team of former Google drone engineers whose list of investors includes Golden State Warriors star Kevin Durant, on Tuesday will begin selling a $2,500 drone designed as a self-flying camera that can follow and shoot video of its owner.
The drone, called the R1, navigates itself using 12 cameras positioned all around its frame, including two on the top and two on the bottom. That helps it avoid objects and people. Skydio’s technology limits its flight to low levels and within a few feet of the operator. A mobile phone app enables the drone to recognize who to follow.
