President Trump secretly gave CIA authority to carry out drone strikes against suspected terrorists: report

President Trump has granted the CIA permission to carry out drone attacks against suspected terrorists, breaking with previous policy and potentially reigniting contentious discussions between the intelligence agency and Pentagon officials, according to a report.

The CIA used to only be allowed to operate drones for surveillance purposes and, in the event that suspected terrorists were located, agency officials would alert the Pentagon who would then conduct the actual strike.

But U.S. officials told The Wall Street Journal on Monday that Trump secretly overhauled that policy shortly after his Jan. 21 speech at the CIA headquarters in Virginia — and human rights groups claim the covert order could have troublesome effects on transparency and accountability.
